CARICOM welcomes new US-Caribbean legislation

CARICOM Council of Ministers recently ended a two-day meeting that the organization was appreciative of the Caribbean’s good working relationship with past US administrations and was looking forward to working with the Donald Trump administration. The 15 member grouping also welcomed the recent passage of the US-Caribbean Strategic Engagement Act of 2016 signed by President Obama in December 2016.

PM heads delegation to renewable energy summit in Abu Dhabi

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves will head a delegation to the 7th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency to take place in the UAE on 14th & 15th January 2017. Government officials from over 150 countries, to include Ministers and, and leaders of international organizations will be in attendance. The Assembly will gather energy leaders to set the global renewable agenda and take concrete action to accelerate the ongoing global energy transition.

Caribbean prepares to pilot COAST insurance to protect fisheries sector

The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism is hosting a working group meeting in Belize from 9 – 10 January 2017, to advance the implementation of a risk insurance facility for fishers in the region. The purpose of the meeting is to chart the steps necessary to qualify a pilot country (or pilot countries) to purchase the COAST insurance product before the start of the hurricane season on June 1, 2017. Officials of the US State Department and World Bank will also be in attendance.

Caribbean regional security, health and disaster agencies face comprehensive readiness test

Security, public health and disaster management personnel from across the Caribbean will be put to the test as they participate in a training exercise aimed at improving regional responses during an emergency situation. Synergy 2017, which will take place from January 11 to 12 at the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency based in Barbados, will present emergency scenarios that could occur in the Caribbean region. The exercise is sponsored by the Global Crisis Response Support Programme of the European Union.

On Tuesday 10th January 2017, the Prime Minister of Grenada and the Ambassador of the EU Delegation to Barbados and the OECS, Her Excellency Daniela Tramacere, signed a grant agreement in the sum of 3 .5 Million EUR for the enhancement of the primary health care sector.

British High Commission funds training for front line social service agency employees

The British High Commission has awarded a grant to Raise Your Voice Saint Lucia Inc. to provide training for front line social service agency workers and institutions which provides support services to women and children who are victims of rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, child sexual and physical abuse. The Rt. Honourable Baroness Anelay, Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom will be present to officially launch the project on Thursday 12th January 2017 at the New Financial Centre, Pointe Seraphine.

OECS to launch Public Education Forum Series in BVI

The Organization of Eastern Caribbean States will hold its first Public Education Forum on Friday 13th January in the British Virgin Islands. This is part of the public education component of the OECS 10th EDF Regional Integration Programme. The Public Education component is aimed at educating and informing the populace of the OECS on the social, economic and political benefits of Regional Integration.
